Thank you for taking the time to visit my office’s website. I am Gerald Arrington, and I am a lifelong resident of Buchanan County. I grew up in the small community of Breaks, Virginia, and now live in Grundy. I have two amazing sons, Dylan is currently serving in the United States Air force, and Jackson, who attends Grundy High School.
Following my graduation from Grundy Senior High School, I attended Clinch Valley College (UVA-Wise), where I received my Bachelor of Arts degree in Government. I went on to graduate 5th in my class from the Appalachian School of Law. In 2004, I was admitted to the Virginia bar and entered into the private practice of law. I later served Buchanan County as an Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney for two and a half years before opening my own law practice, Arrington Law Office. On January 2, 2012, I began my first term as Commonwealth’s Attorney
It is truly an honor to serve as your Commonwealth’s Attorney. Our county has given me so many wonderful blessings, I am pleased to have this opportunity to give back to my community. I pride myself on being accessible, so please don’t hesitate to call or stop by my office.
The Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office serves an incredibly important role in the criminal justice system. Commonly referred to as the District Attorney in most states, the Commonwealth’s Attorney is the legal representative for the citizens of Buchanan County and has the duty of seeking justice when the laws of our Commonwealth are violated.
As a leader of the criminal justice system in Buchanan County, the Commonwealth’s Attorney is responsible for the prosecution of misdemeanor and felony violations of law in the Circuit Court, General District Court, and the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. In a typical year, our office will handle around one thousand felony cases in the Buchanan County Circuit Court and thousands more in the district courts.
The Commonwealth’s Attorney provides legal advice to the police concerning sufficiency of evidence, which charges should be made, and other legal issues concerning the investigations of crime. The Commonwealth’s Attorney is also the legal advisor to the Grand Jury while also serving as an administrator, and a public servant with policy-making responsibilities.

Red Ribbon Week 2022! Gerald Arrington along with Dustin and Selena from Cumberland Mountain Community Services had a great time visiting all of the 5th, 6th, and 7th grade students in the county throughout the week. The kids learned about Red Ribbon Week, which is the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation! There were discussions about the harmful effects of tobacco, alcohol, and drugs have on humans and particularly children and teenagers.
At the conclusion of the program, the kids pledged to live healthy, and drug free! We would like to give a big thank you to Melanie Hibbitts, and all of the principals, teachers, aides, and staff that helped get everything scheduled, and even more so for all their hard work and dedication to our youth on a daily basis! ... The week of October 23, 2022 is Red Ribbon Week! The oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the Nation, Red Ribbon Week started in 1988 in response to the death of DEA Agent Enrique (Kiki) Camarena, who lost his life in the fight against drugs. It was his belief that one person can make a difference.
Parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the destruction cause by drugs in America. Today, the Red Ribbon serves as a catalyst to mobilize communities to educate youth and encourage participation in drug prevention activities, and the belief that one person can make a difference! ... I had the privilege of getting to deliver a letter from Attorney General Jason Miyares to Nathan Wolford thanking him for all of his contributions to his community. He also sent a couple of official lapel pins, so don't be surprised if you see a fancy pin on his RMEF hat. I had been like a kid at Christmas all last week waiting for him to come and get it. ...
